The rolling stone gathers no moss
Some spaces can conjure up a simultaneous feeling of awe and fear. Perhaps it is the way the light falls upon these spaces or the connotations that we impose on them. Regardless of the reason, my urge to imbue value on these spaces exists.
I explore these ethereal qualities by juxtaposing moss in locations of worship. The moss installations are placed in abandoned empty spaces around the shrine.
In the proverb, the moss is portrayed as negative, a burden gathered while staying idle. In other settings, moss procures a more peaceful and almost spiritual feeling. In Sweden, it is seen as the home of magical creatures, a signifier for having crossed the threshold and entered into a different realm.
Process (Performance):
For a month I collected bits of moss from the streets in Fukuoka. Every day on my daily routes to and from home, to work, to the studio, on holiday I gathered little pieces of moss with me.
