“Gild the Lily”, Silk and Gold leaf, 2018, Camilla Lundquist.
Group Exhibition at the Kashii-gu Shrine, Fukuoka, Japan.
A golden tree is wrapped lightly in a small thin layer of silk. Lines of gold trace the cracks and ageing of the tree much like a healing attempt from Kintsugi.
Kintsugi is a Japanese lacquer technique used to restore pieces of broken pottery. Using lacquer as well as gold powder or gold leaf to fill in the cracks, broken pieces are restored and strengthened. The belief is that a piece becomes more valuable and beautiful with the help of its golden accentuated cracks. In many cultures gold is used to decorate the divine.
The ginko tree stands tall outstretched upwards towards the sky. I wrap it in silk mimicking a shimenawa and adorn the cracks in the bark with gold.
